About FEJS

The Forum for European Journalism Students is a non-profit independent organisation dedicated to the exchange of information between in journalism interested European citizens. The Forum organizes or promotes the meeting of students and professionals of journalism and media in general.

There are four main ideas concerning the concept of the FEJS. These ideas are expressed by the 4 words in the organisation’s full name. Together they form the pillars sustaining the essence and nature of the project.

1 - Forum
The Forum is a place where the representatives of different countries or regions are to present and discuss their problems.
The FEJS is a host for the meeting of cultures from all over Europe and it is its wish to promote the interaction between them.
On this Forum the exchange of different experiences is a reality that generates a debate over common problems and different solutions to solve them.

2 - Europe
The FEJS sustains a European Ideal - The policy of FEJS is to promote the diversity within Europe while promoting a European conscience at the same time.
The mission of the FEJS is to enable the students of today’s European countries to be journalists in the emerging European Society.

3 - Journalism
The journalist has an important role in a growing Information Society - It is a journalist’s job to turn raw information into contents available to citizens.
Through practical workshops and seminars, the FEJS explores the different tools to deal with information - information technologies - and discusses over the characteristics and the dynamics between the available channels for postponing information - media.

4 - Students
Members of the FEJS are students and therefore the FEJS is a privileged laboratory to experiment on new techniques and approaches to the communication activities.
The FEJS wishes to enrich the learning contents students receive at school, providing them with a broader “European-wide” perspective.

Which are the purposes and goals of the FEJS?
With its activities the Forum wishes to promote any means of discussion or exchange of ideas concerning journalism between organisations and individuals from Europe.
Its purpose is to be a privileged arena to the exchange of information concerning the teaching and practice of journalism in Europe.

What does the FEJS stand for and debate about?
FEJS stands for diversity. Throughout the years the organisation has leaned over a huge variety of issues concerning the journalism activity: Journalism and minorities; Manipulation of and by Media; Professions in Journalism; Journalism and Environment; Communication relations between Europe and developing countries; Journalism and War. Those are few examples of what issues concern the FEJS.

What does the FEJS represent?
The FEJS represents the multiple systems of teaching and learning journalism around Europe.

Who participates in the FEJS?
The FEJS members are potentially students of journalism and media science courses from all over Europe as well as young journalists that have engaged in the organisation’s activities while being students.

How did it all begin?
The Forum was started in 1986 by an initiative of a group of Dutch and Danish students who wanted to exchange different experiences and thoughts on journalism and has grown larger and larger ever since.

And the Present?
Nowadays, the FEJS has regular participations from over 300 schools all over the continent and has taken in hands the process of professionalization of its official bodies.

The current priorities of the organisation are to create means of self-management within the countries and to develop partnerships with other International organisations.
